They can't be serious, can they?
Did you know that the California state legislature is considering cutting $1.4 billion dollars from the public transit budget? And they want to do it now, when more people than ever are turning to mass transit as the affordable alternative to filling up their gas tanks! Mass transit makes sense for people and the environment. Tell the legislature not to cut funding for public transportation:

A Message from the Center for Biological Diversity
Vote No on 98 and Yes on 99 on June 3rd

Prop 98 is a dangerous measure on California's June 2008 ballot that could wipe out important laws and regulations that protect our environment. It threatens to remove crucial protections for wildlife, forests, open space, wetlands, and smart growth. State and local laws are critical to protecting wildlife, open space, clean air, and clean water. Communities should not be forced to pay developers or corporations to not pollute or to protect endangered species. Join the Center for Biological Diversity in opposing this irresponsible measure.

Prop 98 is simply a Trojan horse that wreaks havoc on our natural heritage. Its supporters want voters to believe it's about eminent domain, but a closer look shows hidden provisions that would wipe out regulations intended to protect our environment. This proposition is the dream of large-scale developers that are looking out for nothing other than profits.

We also encourage you to vote Yes on Prop 99. Proposition 99 -- The Homeowners Protection Act -- will prohibit the government from using eminent domain to take a home to transfer to a private developer. Prop 99 is the type of smart eminent domain reform that will protect homeowners and our environment.

Vote for the environment on June 3rd. Vote No on 98 and Yes on 99.

We Need Ede!
I joined Congressional hopeful Cheryl Ede for some street-corner campaigning yesterday in Solana Beach. Cheryl is running to replace Brian Bilbray in the 50th district. Cheryl is endorsed by Progressive Democrats of America, so she was joined by Judy Hess, the PDA San Diego leader, and two giant banners, one reading "Healthcare Not Warfare" and the other one "Out of Iraq Now." We got a lot of honks, waves, thumbs-up, and fist pumps from people driving by, and people walking by got a chance to meet Cheryl in person. Most seemed receptive, which is not surprising since she is a very friendly person and her positions on the issues serve America's best interests. Cheryl doesn't have as much money as her Democratic opponent, so she needs to get her name out by word of mouth before the June 3rd primary.
Take a look at Cheryl's website, www.CherylEdeforCongress.org , and pass it on to all of your friends, especially those who live in Clairemont, Escondido, Encinitas, Solana Beach, Carlsbad, and San Marcos.

Happy Endangered Species Day!
I still plan to get humans listed, but for today let's recognize all the wild creatures that need our special care. Check out these adorable postcards from the Center for Biological Diversity and send them to your friends:
wolves
polar bears
sea turtles
sage grouse (I think)
fish

Sounding a Warning
Following the recent catastrophes in Myanmar and China, my thoughts naturally turn to doom and gloom. The problem was compounded by watching Evan Almighty tonight. The movie was very cute and a lot of fun to watch, but it brings us back to the age-old story of the ark, which lingers in the backs of our minds and tells us, quietly but firmly, that catastrophe cannot befall the Earth unless a higher power has a good reason to order it, and that if the Earth is to be destroyed, the good people will be warned, and have time to prepare, and for those who prepare well enough, escape is possible.
And since we gullible humans want our lives to make sense, we suck on that story like a pacifier, and we sit here believing that it can't happen to us, while all around us good people are struck down by unthinkable tragedies. The next earthquake could hit while we're sleeping, or on the way to work, or right in the middle of American Idol. We won't be prepared. We won't escape.
The Earth has always had the power to destroy us, but we now have throw the system so far out of balance that we may never be able to put it right. There will be more floods, more droughts, more tsunamis, more hurricanes, more heat waves, more blizzards, more cyclones... Our survival is truly at risk, and therefore I propose today that we list Homo sapiens as an endangered species, and designate planet Earth is its critical habitat. The group of Homo sapiens that inhabits Earth is a distinct population, limited in its distribution to the Earth and incapable of surviving anywhere else or interbreeding with any other population. The population is at an unstable level that cannot support itself. The threats against its survival are many and serious. It is imperative that we grant protected status to human beings today, so we can protect our habitat and get to work on a recovery plan.

Government-Sponsored Prayer??
I received this email at work today:

Dear Fellow County Employee,

This year as in past years, the Board of Supervisors has recognized the National Day of Prayer with a proclamation. In 1952, Congress established an annual day of prayer and in 1988, that law was amended, designating the National Day of Prayer as the first Thursday in May.

On Thursday, May 1, I once again invite you to commemorate the National Day of Prayer at the CAC flagpole at 12:30 P.M. The theme for the 57th annual National Day of Prayer is "Prayer! America ’s Strength & Shield."

Unfortunately, I will be in Washington , D.C. on County business on that day and will not be able to attend the event. However, members of my staff will be present and I hope you join them to keep a tradition going that for us began nine years ago.

We are thankful for the freedom to gather, the freedom to worship and the freedom to pray.

This commemoration is a personal, not a government function; and so, for those of you who choose to participate during your own personal time, I hope you will be able to be at the Flagpole Thursday at 12:30 P.M.

Bill Horn
Supervisor, Fifth District
1600 Pacific Highway, Room 335
San Diego, CA 92101
619-531-5555

They use the County's email network to invite us to pray? They hold the prayer on County property?? And then they claim that it is not a government function--give me a break! Is there going to be a day of meditation too? A day of yoga? A day of peyote? A day of pilgrimage to Mecca? How did they decide which religious observance to celebrate?

I just want to know what happened to the separation of church and state.
